Citizenship by marriage – proof of knowledge of the Italian language

What’s new about applying for Italian citizenship by marriage, civil union, or time of residence?

The law on Italian citizenship by marriage, civil union (for persons of the same sex), or time of residence was amended at the end of 2018, and now in order to begin the process, the person concerned must demonstrate knowledge of Italian through an official certificate (minimum level B1).

This requirement is met by:

– Qualification issued by a public educational institution or equivalent;

– A certificate of Italian language proficiency issued by an authorized institution.

The main certifying bodies belonging to the unified certification system are listed below:

These exams can be taken at the Italian Cultural Institutes, official organs of the Italian government for the dissemination and promotion of Italian language and culture around the world.

The time limit for completion of the proceedings is 24 months from the time of submission of the request (which can be extended to 36 months if necessary).
